World war I was fought in the air, on land and at sea. Thousands of miles of parallel trenches were dug along the western front from the north coast of Belgium to Switzerland.
Various new weapons were introduced during this conflict including hand grenades, poison gas, trench mortars and tanks. Life in the trenches was very unpleasant as the trenches were filthy and waterlogged and rats and disease were common place.
