2026 RAF Museum Pilot Bear
Our 2026 Pilot Bear wears a parachute harness and pack, commemorating the first use of this iconic life-saving equipment in the RAF, one hundred years ago.
With increased aircraft production after WWI, fatal air accidents were becoming more commonplace. The need to supply aircrew with practical and reliable parachutes was paramount. In 1926, the Irvin Air Chute Company opened its factory in Letchworth, Hertfordshire, and supplied the first parachutes to the RAF.
By the end of WWII, the number of lives saved in the RAF by Irvin parachutes alone was over 30,000.
