Renowned for producing efficient, modern twin-engined commercial aircraft, the Lockheed Company's 1938 proposal for a light bomber caught the attention of the British Purchasing Commission, who recognised it as the ideal aircraft for their needs.
They required a maritime patrol aircraft to complement the Avro Anson and decided to acquire this new model, naming it the Hudson for RAF service.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, the RAF had 78 Hudsons operational, all equipped with the distinctive Boulton Paul dorsal turrets upon their arrival in Britain.
