History:
As a purebred combat aircraft, the Supermarine Spitfire's fundamental design allowed for ongoing enhancements, ensuring its production continued throughout the Second World War. This flexibility enabled the Spitfire to be upgraded to counter the threat of the latest Luftwaffe fighters, leading to the rapid introduction of the Spitfire Mk.IX in the summer of 1942 to challenge the formidable Focke Wulf FW190 'Butcher Bird'. This version of the Spitfire has been regarded as possibly the most successful 'stop-gap' fighter in military aviation history.
