After their nation was defeated in 1939, Polish Air Force members fought alongside the French until France fell the following year, at which point they travelled in different directions to Britain. The Poles were some of the most accomplished ace pilots in the Royal Air Force.
The pilots of the all-Polish Kosciuszko unit, known to the RAF as 303 Squadron, shot down more German aircraft than any other unit during the Battle of Britain. Without the Polish pilots, "our shortage of trained pilots would have made it impossible to defeat the German air force and so win the Battle," according to Britain's Air Force minister during the war.
