Polish Spitfire Aces By Wojtek Matusiak
By the time the conflict reached Britain, Polish pilots had fought the Luftwaffe more often than any other Allied airmen. They soon shown that they were extremely aggressive and proficient interceptors during the Battle of Britain, particularly while operating the renowned Spitfire. Using almost 1,500 Mks I, II, V, IX, and XVI to devastating effect, the Polish Air Force eventually emerged as the largest non-Commonwealth Spitfire operator.
Francis "Gabby" Gabreski, the top-scoring USAAF ace of the ETO, and numerous other Allied and Commonwealth aces flew alongside Polish squadrons, further enhancing their fighting prowess. On the other hand, a number of Polish pilots served in different Allied squadrons during the conflict, showcasing their skills alongside pilots from a wide range of countries.
