The D type oxygen mask was introduced in the 1930's and was made of green Melton wool with a chamois leather lining. Oxygen was supplied directly to the wearer via a rubber hose attached to the brass nozzle on the left hand side of the mask. It was this type of mask that was worn by pilots and aircrew during the Battle of Britain in the summer of 1940. There were various developments of microphones that were available for use with this mask. The variant shown here is the Type 21, which was introduced in October 1940
After the Battle of Britain many items of RAF flying clothing were made obsolete after comparison tests with captured Luftwaffe equipment. The D type was finally replaced by a more sophisticated rubber mask in 1942, although it continued to see limited service during this time.
